National Park Cleaning day

onflipflops created the topic: National Park Cleaning day
After an 'inspiring' visit to Tarnthip waterfall on the southern side of Khao Yai national park, I came up with the following idea. I will explain it below as an example, but of course any additional ideas would be more than welcome!
First some images of what inspired me.

The idea:
How about organizing a national-park-cleaning-day every 3 months(?) with as many wildlifethailand-forum members as possible. Pick a national park, bring a lot of garbage bags and garbage picking tools and simply start cleaning up around busy spots, and on trails and park roads. Good for the parks, and also good for all of us to make new like-minded friends.

In my opinion, a day in a weekend would be best for two reasons: 1) volunteer availability, expecting many of us have a job on weekdays, and 2) because on weekends the parks are most busy with locals visiting, and I think it is good that people actually see us doing this. It will make people think, and hopefully some people will even get excited and join us (maybe I am dreaming here, haha, but anyway...).
It would mean a minor investment to buy rubbish picking tools and garbage bags, but I am sure that's not a major financial burden. It means we need some pick-up trucks to transport the garbage out of the park, and to carry all participants around (at least if people are willing to join.).

I know the community on this forum is not huge, but even with just a few people I expect it is possible to clean up a lot of rubbish. More people means we can cover more ground.
If we could get some attention by the media, maybe the group size will increase in the future. But in a way I like the idea of it being primarily 'farang', at least for the first cleaning-day(s). Let it be a statement that the foreign community living in Thailand cares about nature.

Maybe I should just mention a date. After new year seems a good time in my opinion. By then all the hordes of visitors have done their contribution to the rubbish pile. The weekend of 09 - 10 January 2016 would maybe be a good start.
And I guess to get most 'visibility' let's pick the most popular park, Khao Yai national park.

Fantastic idea, and would love to participate if health (none too good of late) permits. Khao Yai perfect.

Could I also suggest that perhaps providing t-shirts for those turning up to participate might also help in making those present look like a team, perhaps helping elicit questions from anyone observing.

Cheers

Good to hear Roblgs.
We had the same idea for wearing WildlifeThailand shirts to indeed look like a team.
Of course that comes with a cost as well, so we have to think about if this is worth it.
Thanks for your input!
And hopefully your health will not let you down!

Thanks to everyone for your positive response - I guess we should just make an appointment for the first Cleaning Day.

As mentioned in the first post, my suggestion is:
Date: Saturday 09 January 2016
Time: 9:00AM? Does that work for most of you?
Location: Khao Yai national park
Meeting point: Parking lot at the Visitor centre ( goo.gl/maps/LQyNjPiYAs92 )

Please, let me know in a private message if this date works for you.
And please add the following details:
1.) Name
2.) Number of participants
3.) Mobile phone
4.) Vehicle/ how many seats?

Of course you are welcome to spread the word and bring anyone interested to help out.
If there is anyone without a vehicle, then maybe you can let me know in private message, and hopefully we can find a solution to get you picked up somewhere in a nearby town, or at the park entrance.

You are more than welcome to bring any tools you think are useful for the purpose of cleaning.

I will try to bring as much as possible.

Hope to hear from all of you, and see you on the 9th of January!

Let's wake up this thread before people forget ;-)
This Saturday, January 9th, is the first Wildlife Thailand - National Park Cleaning & Meeting Day!

Date: Saturday 09 January 2016
Time: 9:00AM
Location: Khao Yai national park
Meeting point: Parking lot at the Visitor centre (goo.gl/maps/LQyNjPiYAs92)
You can reach me (Ton, onflipflops) by phone on: 0878745794
If you will be late, just give a call.

Please, post in this thread or let me know in a private message if this date works for you.
And please add the following details:
1.) Name
2.) Number of participants
3.) Mobile phone
4.) Vehicle/ how many seats?

I have bought 114 large bin bags, biodegradable of course ;-)
No idea if that is enough, maybe way too much. But anyway, even if we carry only one full bag of thrash out of the park I guess it is a success!
If all 114 are full we go home :silly:

I haven't been able to find those garbage picking/ grabber tools. If you happen to own one, please, bring your own. Otherwise maybe a pair of worker's gloves will do. Later this week I hope to find some time to go on the 'hunt' for a few pair of gloves for those who don't have any.

Looking forward to meet you and hopefully we can make a visible difference!

Happy New Year to all of you!
Ton

The first Wildlife Thailand Cleaning & Meeting Day - edition Khao Yai 09 JAN 2016 has come to an end.
A very big thanks to the participants, Rushen, Geoff, Paul, Tan and myself!

I guess we all hoped for a slightly higher turnout, but nevertheless I personally believe the five of us did a great job. And we had a great time exchanging wildlife-related stories, plans, and tips. That alone was worth the trip.

Collecting the litter turned out to be a tiresome activity, but the fact we filled the trunk of a pick-up truck with garbage shows that our visit was necessary and worth the effort.

We got a lot of positive response from park visitors, and park staff. Tan heard a father taking the moment to explain his son what we were doing, and teaching him to be responsible for his own garbage by properly disposing it. I guess that might be the biggest success of the day.
As small as our action might be, I think it was worth it.

The best-garbage-find-of-the-day-award goes to Rushen for finding a banknote of 100 baht, haha.

Thanks again to all participants for your efforts, taking your free time to do a 'dirty' job, totally voluntary (even had to pay to get there, then to enter, and to return), without any personal gain, just from a good heart.
Much appreciated!

Some images to give an impression of the day, and to see the new cleaning team's uniform (Thanks Paul for supplying the Wildlife Thailand shirts for everybody!).

To those who also would like to have a shirt like that (or who'd like to find 100 baht banknotes... :silly: ) : See you next time on the 2nd Wildlife Thailand Cleaning & Meeting Day - edition Kaeng Krachan ;)

Hi all,

Time for the second round of The National Park Cleaning Day..

The idea is to clean up in a national park every few months with as many Wildlife Thailand forum members as possible. Great way to make new like-minded friends, great way to share knowledge/experience about the national parks and wildlife. We will bring garbage bags, garbage picking tools, coffee/tea, just to make more litter for collection also a bit cake/biscuits or anything else you fancy.

Our first meeting was in Khao Yai in early January, there we filled a trunk of a pick-up, that despite it was only 5 of us. Many of the local tourists that day took photos of us while we were collecting litter along the roads. We are pretty sure most of these photos found their way to their Facebook feeds, which is exactly the point of this action.

For our second clean-up day we suggest Kaeng Krachan National Park on Saturday, 12th March. We know it is going to be very hot! But imagine all those calories you are going to burn! So, don't chicken out and join us! ;)

We will start collecting litter from the Sam Yod checkpoint and walk towards Ban Krang Campsite (nearly 13 km), not sure we can reach Ban Krang by foot, but the idea is to walk as much as we can.

Please let us know if you are coming.

- Rushen
