Hi,
I'm new in this forum, have serached but not found the answer I'm looking for:

I'm a keen Wildlife photographer (sounds good ;) in fact I'm an amateur). I have the opportunity to visit Thailand (Bankok) on Business sometimes in late May or June. I plan to add a few (3-4) days. My question is, what could I do in this time? And where would I go? I'm not familiar with Thailand so it should not involve too much travelling around, organisation, etc. Or is this maybe not a good idea?

Thanks & Regards Daniel

Parks like Khao Yai and Kaeng krachan are within short distance (for Thai standards... about 3 hrs drive).
And these are some of the best parks in the country for wildlife watching. Though, if you go by yourself and have no experience in the jungle, it could still be a challenge to find the animals.

Thank you for the quick reply. SO what would be the best way to make the most? Are there tour operators? If possible I would like to avoid having to hire a car. Are these Parks good for this time of the year, or does that not matter?
Sorry for the 'stupid' questions

These are not stupid questions.
The best way to go is with an experienced guide, but maybe I am prejudiced ;-)
For general wildlife tours, you will find most offers for Khao Yai.
Simply google 'Khao Yai tours' and you will find various options.
For Kaeng Krachan there are not much offers apart from bird watching trips.

About time of year, May-June should be fine. For mammals I don't see much difference throughout the year. Birdlife varies depending on migration and nesting season. But this period should be OK for birdlife. And for reptiles too.

Went for two days to Khai Yai National park... it was awesome!
Surprising little birdlife, saw some Hornbills (big an smaller), Bee eaters, Openbill, and some others, but saw many Gibbons, one family quite close and low down in the trees, some monkeys, one Elefant bull, very close up, three snakes, various lizards and gekkos, and of course different insects.
On the last evening we went to the bat cave, watching the millions of bats leave the cave. Unfortunatly the light was bad because of an upcoming storm, but a real experience never the less, in my opinion a MUST when visiting this area!
The tour guides (Tata and Jay) did an excellent job. Now I have the callenge to sort through almost 1000 images.

Thanks for your assistance!

Sounds like you had a good trip. Yes, the daily feeding migration of the Wrinkle-lipped Bats is amazing indeed. I have seen it many times, but still each time it is unbelievable to see that for one hour long! bats keep flowing out of the mountain, non-stop. I have never been inside the cave, but it must be huge.

You need a bit of luck when visiting that the wind direction is good (on departure they fly against the wind) and that the bats come out not too late. The earliest I have seen them come out was at 16:30, sometimes they wait till 19:00 before they start, but generally it is around 17:30 - 18:30...
With Southwestern wind is nice because you can photograph the swirling river of bats against the sunset background, and often in that time of year they come out relatively early and often seem to fly very low. So low that you can nearly touch them while standing on the ground.
Indeed a must to see for those who haven't seen it yet.

Glad to hear Jay & Tata did a good job.

How was the weather, was it rainy that the birds did not really want to show much?
I agree with Paul (admin), show us some pics ;-)

Weather was great, sunny (hot) with some clouds, in the evening thunderstorms and some rain. This did not affect me too much, as it was late but it id make the 'bat' experience not so great from a photographic point of view. It was still very impressive though.

I'm slowly uploading pictures to my 500px account . I will attach some to this thread as soon as I have some time.

Nice shots on your 500px account. Looking forward to see more!
Very lucky to get the shot of the elephant bading in the river. I have seen a lot of elephants in Khao Yai, but only a couple of times in the water.

Just clear you browser cache and try again - we have been having issues with the template - I have just changed back to the old template. Also make sure you downsize the pictures first because if the picture is full size you will probably get a browser time out - we usually recommend 800 to 1000 pixels longest side.

Apologies

Thanks you all for the support! I guess not a bad result for two days at Khao Yai while on a business trip :-)

Fantastic set of photographs. It always amazes me when people see so many different species on one trip!
