Not exactly a question for a wildlife forum, haha, but anyway, it is somewhat related.
I am looking for a pick-up truck for jungle visits, but because it will also be used a lot on the regular roads I prefer that it is not permanently 4x4, but I want the option to change to 4x4 whenever necessary (yes I know a 2x4 with high clearance can cover 99% of the situations encountered in most parks). Does anyone know which car brand(s) readily available in Thailand have this option to switch between 2- and 4-wheel drive?

I heartily recommend a 4WD - as the say, "you never need it UNTiLL you need it". Same goes for a host of other things that not having has left me stranded on occasion :side: 4WD is essential for me at times in the rainy season as are AT tires. I agree, it needs to be switchable because driving on a road in 4WD costs you more in fuel as well as being a not very smooth driving experience.
I think that most Thai pickups are switchable, i.e. not permanent 4WD. My Toyota is, as is Ed's Mitsuibishi.

I would recommend Toyota Hilux 4WDs, probably older models such as SR5 or Sport Cruiser, Tigers tend to be a bit fuel thirsty. Newer model Vigos’ are not quite as robust as the older models and tend to need a bit more attention. Toyota die-hards say only the leaf-spring really old Hilux’s (or Mighty-X) are the way to go, but I prefer the wishbone front suspension, as its far more comfortable on a long journey.
One time in Kuiburi town my SR5 needed a UJ bearing change at 10pm, from breakage to back on road was 45 minutes and just a couple of thousand Baht.
On thing is for sure, all second hand 4WDs in Thailand maintain their prices and sometimes hard to find, but hey, what do I know…

A year or so back I looked at the SUV's and found out that the Toyota Fortuner 4x4 is permanent 4x4. Which was the reason I prefered the Mitsubishi Pajero which is switchable.
I more or less assumed that the pick-ups would have the same 'problem', just permanent 4x4. Indeed especially the fuel consumption on the highways was my worry.
But good to hear that most models are switchable.
