Construction tycoon Premchai Karnasuta has been arrested for allegedly hunting wildlife in the World Heritage Thungyai Naresuan sanctuary in Kanchanaburi province. Park rangers arrested Mr Premchai, the 63-year-old president of the huge SET-listed construction company Italian-Thai Development (ITD), in a no-camping area of Huai Pachee forest in the western part of the Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Officials found skinned carcasses of protected wild animals, including a 1.48-metre-long black panther, a Kalij Pheasant and a barking deer, three long-barrelled guns and ammunition in his possession.

High-ranking officials of the Natural Resources and Environment ministry, including the minister, today asked the public to wait for results of the investigation into the arrest of a CEO of huge listed construction firm in a wildlife sanctuary in Kanchanaburi province before passing judgement.

Surasak Kanjanarat (Ed: Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand) and the director general of national park, wildlife and plant department, Thanya Netithamkul, said in separate interviews that the probes into Premchai Karnasuta’s arrest in Thung Yai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary on Sunday night would be undertaken in strict accordance with the law and based on the evidence available.

“Don’t blame anyone yet or judge who is wrong or right. Instead, let us all wait for the investigators to speak,” Surasak said.

Asked whether the ministry officials were involved in the allegations, Surasak said he had no further information.

Meanwhile Director General Thanya told reporters that the investigation would be done in accordance with the law. “The investigators are in the process of gathering information and evidence and the officials will undertake the investigation with justice and fairness to all parties concerned, Thanya said.

Premchai was arrested at his campsite in the wildlife sanctuary on Sunday night and taken to Thong Pha Phume police station where he was charged. He has maintained his innocence.

The carcasses of Kalij pheasants, a black leopard and barking deer as well as two rifles and a shotgun were reportedly found at the campsite.

Presumably that means he is powerful enough to get away with it.

In some ways this is testament to how Thailand is in fact changing - these kind of stories would never had made the news or a report not too long ago, the rangers would have been terrified to do their tasks so diligently.

All of Thailand is changing except for the rich and privileged. Lets hope they give those responsible at the very least the sentence that the policeman got in Keang Krachan. And that this time the "poaching guides" get a sentence as well.

It makes you wonder how often this guy has been doing this. It took me quite a few years to see my first black leopard. With proper planning, and enough local knowledge, the chance could definitely be increased quite a bit, but still. I highly doubt this was his first night of 'pleasure hunting'. It would be interesting to visit one of his homes/ offices to see what other skins decorate the walls.

Long live social media! Let's hope it will hunt him for a while.

Theres masses of new articles this morning in the various Thai press giving more details of the arrest and the subsequent property searches. But theres one little thing that intrigues me - the story so far includes 4 people ..... The Ital-Thai Pres'.... his driver.....his cook.... and a friend who is a restaurant owner. All from Bangkok and one 4x4 pickup.

Is it me or does someone seem to be missing from this.

Your not the only one who thinks there is something (someone) missing :

Premchai ‘must have had help’ in jungle.

A retired director general in the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry yesterday said he believed more than three people accompanied construction company tycoon Premchai Karnasutra on his trip to Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in Kanchanaburi province.

Damrong Pidet, former director general of the National Park, Wildlife and Plants department, said that Premchai would have needed someone familiar with Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary to help him on his alleged hunting trip.

Without any help from local hunters, Premchai could not have survived in the thick forest, particularly during the night time, Damrong said. As an inexperienced person, he would have needed professional help to remain safe.

Premchai appeared not to be a professional shooter, although he had with him many rifles in the campsite. Therefore, he may have had someone else shoot the protected animals, Damrong said.

At Premchai’s campsite, forest rangers found remains of barking deer, black leopard and pheasant.

Three other suspects were arrested for illegal poaching along with Premchai, but they were his driver, his cook and his close aide. None of them had jungle experience, Damrong said. Therefore, he believed someone had escaped arrest.

In fact it is probably streatching credibility to believe the fat slob who is used to sitting on his chuff giving orders and having others do the work would, or even could, track down and kill a leopard.

It says nothing anywhere about their phones being taken off them but they could be the key to the whole thing as they were probably used to organise the trip, guides and or local hunters (poachers).

Even if his words are true that it was only his 2nd time in Thung Yai, it doesn't mean he is inexperienced in the jungle. Obviously there are many more parks he might have been visiting and gained enough experience to know where to get the best chances to hunt. Then again, certainly not unlikely he had some additional help that fled the scene/ media exposure.
The fact that he could not have been the shooter because of inexperience seems ridiculous judging the amount of riffles found at his home(s).
And I think it is exactly the kick of pulling the trigger by himself that makes these people do such hunting trips.
But seems like they are slowly preparing the public that the charges of actually shooting the wildlife will be moved to one of the other party members.

Sitting on your chair surrounded by riffles and animal carcasses that are 'accidentally' scattered around your camping spot and insisting it is not what it seems...
It's funny how someone caught red-handed can still lie with a straight face. Well, watching the video of him and his lawyer, it seemed clear that even the lawyer - generally people who are great at lying with a straight face - was struggling to talk his way out...

Good to see it gets a lot of media attention. Without facebook this would unlikely to have reached the news.

And one wonders how often these activities are happening on protected park soil.
