This came to mind when i was thinking about the cave rescue.

To those who use hand held GPS to keep track of where they are in forests.

Looking at one of the photos of a group of the rescue divers with what appeared to be hand held GPS I was wondering is there a device, application, that can lay down a track in a cave that can be followed on the return journey?

I do not know the answer. What I do know is that my gps struggles in deep valleys to 'contact' the satellites. I highly doubt it would work in a cave, but I have never tried.

I can confirm they will not work under concrete or metal cover and not in caves or underwater either. There is a system that can be used underwater and underground though, where a signal is sent out from a special beacon (or multiples) and a mobile responder is carried by the diver.
