I thought this might be of interest to some here. I picked up a second hand copy of the book "Chasing the Dragon's Tail" and it is a very interesting read. Alan Rabinowitz tells his own story as a young biologist studying cats and other wildlife in Huai Kha Khaeng in the 1980's. Sadly, Alan passed away last year.

The book describes the almost non-existence of meaningful conservation at the time, and the struggles that led to many of Thailand's National Parks & Wildlife Sanctuaries gradually becoming more protected. Although there is still much to be improved, it's amazing how far things have come since then.
