Any help appreciated in identifying this small bird, please.
Size estimate 10-12cm.
Solitary, no sound.
It doesn't match anything I can find in any book.
Seen in garden, Petchabun 29.12.13
That's difficult. My first guess was that it was some kind of flycatcher.
Green-backed Flycatcher was the mosst likely contender that I could find, but still not happy with that, I googled a bit on a second guess, kind of Iora.
And then I found the following blog:
It has a picture that is quite similar to the bird you photographed. Same white banding on the dark wing, and a slightly orange tint on the throat... He says it is a Common Iora of the race aequanimis. There seems to be quite a bit of variation within this species.
Your bird appears to be differently shaped, but perhaps it is because it looks like it has its feathers fluffed (not sure if that's a real word, haha, but hope you understand it ) up.
But I certainly don't consider myself a birder, and my guess could be well off...
Maybe somebody else can give a better ID.
OK, many thanks.
I've checked a few other sites and that looks like a good ID although the bird seemed a lot smaller than the 15cm claimed for the Common Iora. The fluffed up look was probably because it was unusually chilly that day!
