Hi all,

Another very successful herping round with Ton resulted in finding 9 species/21 specimens of snakes. Almost all found by Ton. Here the list he composed, from Facebook;

6x Trimeresurus albolabris
2x Ahaetulla prasina
7x Ahaetulla nasuta
1x Oligodon fasciolatus
1x Boiga siamensis
1x Enhydris sp. (quite sure it was plumbea, but it disappeared too quick)
1x Dendrelaphis sp. (most likely pictus, but could have been subocularis)
1x Dryocalamus davisonii
1x Pareas carinatus

We didn't manage to catch the Enhydris and Dendrelaphis ones, but here few photos from the few others (I didn't bother photo the A. prasina/nasuta this time);

Boiga siamensis - 1

Boiga siamensis - 2

Oligodon fasciolatus

Dryocalamus davisonii

Pareas carinatus

Trimeresurus albolabris

Leptobrachium smithi

P.s. The Dendrelaphis and A. nasuta species were found in Cha'am district, not in Kaeng Krachan!

Now thats a WOW! What a great trip that was - you saw more snakes in one trip than I do a year! Fabulous!

Yes, that was surprisingly successful. Not sure if the weather in the Southern regions of the park is always this soft in the winter months, or were we just lucky? Maybe just luck with the weather, because right now the temperatures near Khao Yai are also quite high for the time of year.
I have to add that 20 of the 21 snakes were found in the dark, so that could be one reason why you do not see as many throughout the year, Paul; at least i think you don't do much night walking, or do you? (it's great for insects as well!)... And this time we really worked like machines, haha. We started from the moment it got dark and continued I think all three nights till midnight. On one of these nights we walked 8kms.

If only access inside the parks would be a bit easier at night... but I understand the risks. Though in the case of the area we were at, there were more elephants outside the park border than inside... The first night the elephant roars were the soundtrack of our herping trip.

Hi Rushenb,
Congratulations to your successful Trip. Very nice pictures.
„Southern Kaeng Krachan“ don’t sound like you have visited Ban Krang. Were have you been on your 3 Night Trip?

Another question is, where exactly you have found the Dendrelaphis and A. nasuta species in the Cha’am district?
I know this area well, thats why I ask…

Hi Bjarnie,

We were basically driving from Kaeng Krachan town towards Pala-u, and stopped by in many places along the edges of the park. We drove into so many side roads we could find. As long as there were no barking dogs around, we were out 30-60 minutes, searching a bit and than take a different location.

So was the case in Cha'am too. It was our first time there, we were simply driving along the main road (north/south) and taking the side roads, searching in dry fields, bushes etc. I remember at one point we were near a mountainous area with more wild vegetation. Snakes can be found anywhere, all you need is skilled eyes like Ton's.

Cheers,
Rushen
