He may not be everyone's cup of tea, but you have to take your hat off to a man who can speak so clearly and so plainly on this issue....................

"Elephants are our national symbol and are under threat from poaching and trade," Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said.

He called for the country to "clean up its act" on the illegal wildlife trade, and promised heavy punishment for those who violate the law.

"I will no longer tolerate corruption and ignorance on this matter."

I like his words.
And even if not everything he has done might be perfect, so far there seemed to have been quite a bit of action. At least there seem more and more arrests in the illegal logging in the East.
So let's hope he is serious about this and fights it hard, before it is too late.

Just read recently that 'our neighbors' (Malaysia) have announced the Sumatran Rhino to be extinct in the wild in their country. All that is left, are the ones in Sumatra.
Another big mammal soon to disappear from the planet... forever.
If nothing is done elephants, tigers etc will follow.
Greed is hard to fight.

Hi

The words are indeed welcome, but it needs to go way beyond a few flagship species ("elephants are our national symbol"), rather to make a concerted effort at holistic habitat conservation, inclusive of everything as well as the flagship symbols... Improving general awareness of the environment, that appears to be deplorably absent from the bulk of the population, would be no small achievement either... the environment seems currently to be the place people go to dispose of their rubbish, even if that is just over the wall.
