Hi Wildlife Thailand forum!

We are a group of students from an international school in Chiang Mai. We are participating in the International Silver Award for the Duke of Edinburgh programme, which requires us to undertake an ‘adventurous journey’ exploration.

We have recently completed a practice exploration at Phu Khieo, and learned a number of interesting animal tracking skills. We found this experience fascinating, and were looking for an opportunity to put these skills into practice for our main journey.

We are interested in going to Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary for this journey, but were unsure how to go about this. We were wondering whether it would be possible to use some sand and camera trapping techniques, as well as using the hides at the sanctuary - does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, how can we go about it?

Who would we need to contact?

How difficult would it be to go about this?

Thanks a lot for any help anyone may be able to provide.

This is something I personally don't have experience with - so that is my disclaimer first ;+)

Any organized activity in a National Park requires pre-approval/endorsement of either a) The Park Chief/Superintendent or b) the District Office (DNP) or c) DNP Head Office. As HKK is a Sanctuary I am not 100% sure who the approvers would be but presume it would be the same.

I would recommend contacting the DNP district office closest to your school for official advice, there must be one in Chiang Mai. Just get someone who can read Thai to check the DNP website for the address.
