I am trying to get some video of Bee Eaters and to get the bird flying in I have to leave the camera on and filming for long periods, problem is its getting really hot, almost untouchable. Is this common?

Camera is a 5D, Mark lll

Common if you try and film for longer periods on some cams (esp older ones but not sure if yours is one of them as I use Nikon and Pansonic for vid) - try it again and then check if the heat is coming from a) your sensor and the cam body is trying to disipate the heat b) your battery or c) from the memory card. Could be your card cannot handle the constant throughput.
